I should probably start by confirming that I've been a Star Trek fan since I was a child in the 1980s, starting with Star Trek: The Next Generation and then moving onto to everything else that Star Trek had to offer.

Which is a long way of saying I'm familiar with the good and the bad of past Star Trek films and TV shows.

And yes, I thought this film was superb - an out and out action-adventure of epic proportions, with a visceral style and special effects to make your eyes burst out of their sockets. Director J.J Abrams has fashioned a film that actually succeeds in being a MOVIE, and not a big budget TV episode - with pitch perfect casting of all the crew and performances that honour and respect the original crew.

But there are also huge changes - the creation of a new timeline and the death of and destruction of key elements of the original series have very much divided fandom. And while I fully understand those feelings and the basis of them, I do not share… more »

But there are also huge changes - the creation of a new timeline and the death of and destruction of key elements of the original series have very much divided fandom. And while I fully understand those feelings and the basis of them, I do not share them.

Once again, for the first time since 1966 we will be going out there into the UNKNOWN!! The future is now a blank canvas and is now the fertile ground for hopefully many new adventures to come. While I understand that upsets some, I find it to be the very point of Star Trek - 'To boldy go....'

There is also, somewhat of a lack of depth, allegory or philosphical undertones but since this is a reintroduction and rebuilding of the foundations, frankly, I can wait for the sequel for that - this was about showing the formation of the crew, nothing else and it still has an emotional depth severely lacking from the last couple of films.

It remains to be seen what the sequels, now confirmed, will add to this first act in a new story - but I, for one, look forward to it with enthusiasm!

Which is exactly what this film is. As a Sci-Fi Action film I really did enjoy this, and the acting was top-notch. I thought some of the characters were portrayed excellently, especially Bones and Spock.

As a Star Trek film, this fell down in many areas in my opinion. First off, changing the time-line completely was annoying. I personally would of thought, that having the original crew (After Chekov is suppose to join) trying to stop the time-line being altered would of been a more interesting story, rather than just altering the time line and messing things up.

The film had way too much action and not enough time building the plot or the background of the characters like previous Star Trek films. Spock shouldn't be dating Uhura for one.

Although I found it good as a Sci-fi action film, the constant switching from camera to camera, jumping scenes really quick was too much to keep up with. I actually hope they don't make a sequal to this. I would of preferred another… more »

But still, I wouldn't say to anyone not to watch it. Even if you may have the same opinion as myself it is worth watching and if you've never watched Star Trek before, then you'll probably enjoy it more than people who were bought up with Star Trek.

If it wasn't a Star Trek film I would be giving it 4/5. But seeing as it is a Star Trek film, it gets 2/5.
